You should be watching The Fall.

August 9, 2013

David Duchovny’s birthday was Wednesday and today it’s the natal celebration of Gillian Anderson. Will some gossip astrologist look into this TV-star-crossed pairing?  The former Agent Scully has luckily having a bit of a TV renaissance, with her guest appearances in the NBC show Hannibal but also starring in an amazing BBC series you should be watching: The Fall.

Anderson plays Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson, who’s brought in to Belfast to investigate a stalled murder investigation. This is not a whodunit – the audience is introduced to the serial killer straightaway, watching him work, seeing how closely he gets to being caught while managing to elude both the cops and his live-in family from suspecting his ‘hobby’. Gibson is less of a Scully and more of a Tennison (i.e. La Mirren in Prime Suspect) from the later years when she’s already been around the block several times about your sexist assumptions and has no time for your judgments about her banging a local detective.

For those of us who’ve loved Anderson pretty madly since X-Files and have been waiting for the next amazing vehicle for her to drive all over our hearts, this is it. There’s only 5 episodes of the BBC drama, but luckily it’s already been renewed for a second season. Those of us in the States can watch them all on Netflix. If you’re a fan of the above-mentioned shows, or Top of the Lake, or even the remake of Prime Suspect with Maria Bello (don’t judge), you won’t be disappointed in The Fall.

The are so many delicious elements to this show, but what I most enjoy is the maturing of Anderson’s craft. She is FORMIDABLE. Anderson commands every scene with an ease that makes you wonder why the hell it’s taken so long for her to get her own show. She was always a solid player even in mediocre feel good dreck like “Playing By Heart”, but on “The Fall” you simply cannot take your eyes off her.

This show has been my latest Brit detective show obsession (and let me tell you about my Brit detective show obsessions, or rather, don’t, cause I’ll embarrass myself) but a big hearty YES to all this. Because of the way the show is filmed and framed, I also find it to be a uniquely unsettling experience watching it, and I’m glad it’s on Netflix so I can pause and get up and stomp my heebie-jeebies out in the living room. The script and soundtrack aren’t afraid of silence, and it really draws you along. Anderson is just stunning in this show, I’m so glad it’s getting a second season, I just want to watch more of her.

Gillian Anderson seems to me to be the natural successor to Glenn Close, at least on TV. She’s got so much gravitas and powerful sexiness! I wish she were in more movies.

Great show. Can’t wait for the new season. We’re doing alright with our Brit Dramas, ain’t we? Can’t wait for Sherlock to return hashtagpressure.
