Who is that Actor: John Carroll Lynch
Barry & Kiki crystallized the concept behind the series “Who is That Actor?” when summing up John Carrol Lynch: “ZODIAC!” “STAN FROM VOLCANO!” While they didn’t much care for Body of Proof they certainly seem pleased to see a character actor fave in a role that might force them to have to learn the actor’s name. Let’s put it this way: I have long referred to this actor as “Melting Stan” and only googled his actual name when I decided I had to write him up for this series.
Lynch is a part of the cast from the film Volcano, which has the dubious honor of containing some of the best acting (not even being cheeky) in one of the worst movies ever. Volcano robbed Cheadle of the A-list above title credit he so richly deserves. Let’s put it another way: Cheadle is to Volcano what Jones (who attempts to shepherd this hot mess) is to The Fugitive. Which means that Lynch would have had his shot at TV Dad stardom if the film’s terrible special effects, bad script and embarrassing dialog, (which these actors handled like troopers) hadn’t made this film complete and utter shit.
That Lynch isn’t a household name and is often relegated to creepy criminals, gruff cops and hapless dads is completely a waste of his charisma and charm. What makes Volcano even more heartbreaking is it’s one of the few films that demonstrated Lynch’s talent and range. That said, The Good Girl showcased his comedic abilities and it’s definitely one of my faves. Even in crap like Gothika, Lynch is fun to watch.
