33 Days: Former Oscar Winners Turned TV stars

February 3, 2011

Isaac Hayes was the first African American to win this particular flavor of Oscar and the first to win an Oscar in a non-acting category. Before his sudden death, Hayes had become better known as South Park‘s Chef than for his musical legacy.

What’s better: Getting an Oscar or Getting an Oscar from Denzel. I’m still trying to figure out how Whoopi beat out Lorraine Bracco, but they’ve both had nice run of things. Arguably The Sopranos is probably a better gig than spending every morning with those claptraps on The View, as Whoopi does. Still, we can all suck it, because Whoopi gets up every morning and sings, “EGOT Rhythm Who Can Ask for Anything More…”

The best part of winning an Oscar? Getting cruised by Danny Glover. Kathy Bates is our hero, but her Harry’s Law is a zero. Them other nominees (save Meryl) look mad!

Timmy gets his propers clad in a velvety prom tux. Nice of his movie mom to deliver the good news. Timmy’s Oscar did not bring with it Tommy Lee Jones-esque levels of fame and fortune. Oh no. Timmy had to churn it out and spent a long time playing parts beneath his craft until at some point in the late 90 were he played a lot of jerks in shiny suits. Then came Kidnapped and then came Leverage, which showcases Lil Timmy’s sublime talent for pathos and comedy. I’m not being snarky. You know I love me some Timmy Hutton! He’s one of my Ordinary White People!!!

Here’s another one: Forest Whitaker, scheduled to debut later this month in CBS’ spinoff Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.

Hey we’ll be CBS prime time name twins – I have Lawrence Fishburne on CSI!

Geena Davis had her own show for a hot minute. It was actually really good. Commander in Chief!

Yeah, Geena’s show was barely seen and then she was back to doing Stuart Little caliber projects. Though in Geena’s defense she was birthing babies and qualifying for the Olympics.

Um, my comment about Fishburne was meant for a different post – I totally thought Redlami’s Forest Whitaker comment was about him playing a character with his name!! Ha. “Only you can stop narcissism.”

Also, I watched episode three of Harry’s Law. Better than week two, but that’s not saying much.

@raymondj – haha. That Irma P. Hall episode was a mess.
