Your Friday Five: Music to Carve Pumpkins to.

Or you know… Scowl at teenagers trying to trick or treat.

  • Suicide – “Ghost Rider” I probably could have thrown any number of Suicide songs on here as, in general, Suicide mad slightly terrifying noises. Wouldn’t have it any other way. I always have to put this on at least a few times this time of year.
  • Johnny Cash – “Ghostriders In the Sky”
  • R. Dean Taylor – “There’s a Ghost In My House” One of the only white dudes signed to Motown! This is a gimmicky song I can get behind. It was also covered by The Fall who bring a more menacing vibe to this tune.  It also kicks ass.
  • Nick Cave with Kylie Minogue – “Where the Wild Roses Grow” Howsabout a murder ballad to get that skin crawling. How much do you love Nick Cave?
  • Neko Case – “Hex”. This is Neko covering Catherine Irwin (of Freakwater). I prefer Catherine’s original, as it’s waaayyyyy more creepy and stark, but Neko’s lush version still can cause goosebumps. Couldn’t find a good version of the original online, but please do seek it out. You will not be disappointed.

Ooh, this is so great. Yay. I am very impressed, but unsurprised, that you compiled a fantastic musical scare-playlist without resorting to Bela Lugosi’s Dead!

I love Neko Case — and Freakwater. I honestly didn’t know “Hex” was Catherine Irwin’s song. Have to look that one up.
