Who is That Actor: Saundra Santiago

Does this woman ever age??? photo credit 2009

On the 80s cop show Miami Vice, Saundra Santiago co-starred as Det. Gina Calabrese, one half of television’s most relentless prostitution vice squad crack team (with Det. Trudy Joplin played by Olivia Brown). Det. Calabrese and Det. Joplin must have busted every damn sex trafficking ring, erotic massage parlor and illegal pornography distribution center, all without breaking a sweat, despite wearing thick fur chubbies in Miami heat! When Calabrese wasn’t getting shot by thugs looking for Tubbs, stabbed by a fake John who didn’t realize she was a fake hooker, left for dead at a safehouse or being called the wrong name in bed by her sometimey boyfriend James “Sonny” Crockett, she liked to apply her singing talents for Miami’s most ruthless and discriminating night club patrons.

But Ms. Santiago is even more old school than Miami Vice! She also appeared in the 1984 in the hip hop classic Beat Street as the put upon girlfriend Carmen Cararro of artist Ramo!

Santiago played another Carmen on the recently concluded soap Guilding Light!

Recently, Santiago caught my eye as one of the litigants in the Arthur Frobisher case on FX drama Damage. I swear one day I’ll get around to writing up that show! [ETA: We finally did, read all about why we love Damages.]

Why wasn’t Saundra on “Cop Rock” with chops like that? But seriously, don’t you love law enforcement officers that can bring down the house with their singing abilities?! In NYC we actually had a cop who was crooning at the Yankee games for a while. I think he retired from the force to do a night club act.

I don’t have a catholic fetish, but I could see how one could develop when you have a gold cross pointing at cleavage like that! Sorry, ahem, I mean, I kinda want to look at To Sir, With Love 2 now.

@penpusher, Santiago would have fit in perfectly on Cop Rock, though how many episodes of the show were actually produced?

@raymondj – I am totally dying to see what how many levels of hot buttered fail are contained in a film called To Sir, With Love 2.

Does she have an aged painting of herself in her basement?!? Surgery may be involved but money alone can’t but looking that good after so many years.

I never watched Cop Rock but associate it with Hooper which I did watch. Is my memory correct and they were in back to back time slots?

I know, right. Though oddly I don’t suspect surgery or nothing major, because Santiago doesn’t have a wind blown face and watching her in HDTV one doesn’t observe the kind of tricks used to hide the tell tale signs of face tampering; namely the scarring.

OMG To Sir With Love 2! I was randomly going through the credits of one of my least favorite directors: Peter Bogdanovich the other day, and there it was (I didn’t click on it or I would have seen the Santiago connection)… and now here it is again!

I vaguely remember attempting to sit through this when it aired. Really, I think it should have been called Too Too To Sir With Love 2. Feel free to add any “Electric Boogaloo” suffixes you like.
