Who is that actor: Bill Smitrovich

September 1, 2010

The one that's not the main dude from Millennium.

Character actor Bill Smithrovich and I go way back. All the way back to the pilot episode of Miami Vice entitled “Brother’s Keeper”, where he shined as Sonny Crockett bestie turned crooked cop Lt. Scott “Scotty” Wheeler. Before there was piping hot interwebs flowing into homes and access to IMDB, my sister and I called this cat “Scotty”. He seemed to turn up in everything. Now we know his name!

Like cohort Philip Baker Hall, Smithrovich is on the short list of reliable character actors for all your high ranking military and senior members of the cabinet needs. In Air Force One he played a crusty military officer to Baker Hall’s Attorney General. In Independence Day, he played yet another crusty commander, this time of the ill-fated Black Knights stationed at El Toro! He even played Alexander Haig in a TV movie where James Brolin played Ronald Reagan! But perhaps he is most known for his co-starring role opposite Evita herself – Patti Lupone – in the drama Life Goes On, where he played Drew Thacher!

This fall, Smithrovich puts his fatigues in storage and dons sharp suits to co star with Blair Underpants in the upcoming NBC drama series The Event, playing the vice president to Underpants’ Commander in Chief. Here’s hoping the prolific character actor will finally become a household name!

Bwaaaah!! I love Bill Smithrovich. Particularly on Nero Wolfe, chomping away on his cigar, mugging with Timothy Hutton, and yelling “Ah, nuts!”

He’s the kind of “BS” I can thoroughly enjoy… I need Gene Hackable and him to work together in a “Fugitive” or “Heat” like scenario – one is tracking down the other (and doesn’t matter who is who).

I never knew his name! I remember him from “Life Goes On” and also “Millenium” (I was one of the 22 people who watched that show without being paid to), but his name rang no bells. Now I know!

I am soo glad Bill has gone on to do other things – or else I would have “Herman Munstered” him, much like I do the guy who played Herman Munster… Bill would have been “Scotty!!!”, forever…
