IFMiB Commenter of the Week: Heather Flescher

May 15, 2010

Heather writes no line before its time.

Heather Flescher is a fantastic commenter who has jumped right in with pitch perfect contributions to the content provided here. What I dig most is having something really meaty to respond to. What can prove disappointing is writing bomb ass content only to have it greeted with statements that pretty much don’t lend themselves to continuing the conversation. It’s a big deal to have Heather Flescher around. Thanks so much!!!

  • Creative powerhouse? Sort of. There’s so much hype surrounding Welles that I avoided his work for a long time because of it. I don’t like hype. But the more I learned about film history and how films are made, the more I realized I had to give him a try. And now, when I’m in full-on art house mode, I can gush about the tracking shot in “Touch of Evil”, or the camera angles in “The Trial”, or the recursive flashbacks in “Mr. Arkadin”, or… just about anything in “Citizen Kane”. The dude was brilliant.

But he also had a nasty tendency to waste his creative powers. His stubbornness, his eagerness to make enemies, his tendency to start projects he couldn’t finish, his belief he could overcome any obstacle through sheer genius… he caused so many problems for himself. It’s true he had to face a lot of undeserved problems on top of that. But whenever I watch a great Orson Welles film, or even lesser ones like “The Stranger”, I can’t help wondering how many others we might be able to enjoy if he had just handled his career differently.

  • My #1 pick is President Reagan saying into a hot mic that he had just signed legislation outlawing the existence of the Soviet Union, and “we begin bombing in five minutes”. The Gipper had quite a track record of not knowing what he was doing, but he outdid himself with that little gem.
  • Mmm. So much to think about. Octavia Butler is awesome. Operatic blue chicks are awesome. Zeus as the President is awesome. Gary Oldman being dangerous is always awesome. But it’s the overall look of the movie that gets me the most. Such a groovy esthetic! It makes me think of another Milla Jovovich film, “Ultraviolet”, which is frankly a pretty stupid flick… but it makes the future look totally cool. As it should be.
  • My favorite heist film trope is the aging, good-hearted specialist who retired from all that dirty business but grudgingly agrees to do “one last job”.

Oh, gosh. I want to thank the Academy… all the other nominees, because it’s an honor just being mentioned in the same breath as you… my agent, for going the extra mile… Joan Rivers, for being nice to me on the red carpet… but most of all, the unsung heroes out there, the people who actually do the things that I just comment on. This award is for all of you, and I wish you could be up here with me right now accepting it. I love you all! Good night and god bless.
