Your Friday Five: #4

May 14, 2010

Let it blurt!

  • Breaking News: Mary J. Blige has been cast to play Nina Simone in an upcoming biopic.

    Wild is the wind machine.

Some folks on the Nina Simone Facebook Page seem to be getting their feathers all flustered about this choice. True, there aren’t really any flaming comments, but they haven’t even started filming yet and people are giving the ol’ “I don’t see it.” and “oh, she’s just a singer, not an actress…”. First of all, “just a singer”? Couldn’t you as easily say that about anything? “Well, I’d love to go see David Bowie in concert, but he’s just an actor.” Seriously, “just a _____” is one of the “tastes like chicken” of critique. Secondly, “I don’t see it.” Well, maybe that’s why you don’t work in the pictures! Lack of vision on your part doesn’t mean shit. It’s called acting for a reason jerkstores.

  • Slate gives us a little run-down of Girl Band Movie tropes. Ah yes, the old “Fame Will Almost Break Up A Band” is one of my faves. That doesn’t mean I don’t still love this this:
  • Jarvis confronts his record label for taking "Leaking water faucet" off of the album.

Jarvis Cocker, who not only has one of the best names in pop music, and fronted one of the greatest bands to grace god’s green earth, has made an album of ambient found sounds. Contains such hits as: “Hamhouse – Footsteps through the house”, “Gardening”, and the massive club banger, “Birds in water garden”.  So put on your cordouroy jacket, rock that salt n’ pepper beard, sit down and let the found sounds take you away…

  • Goddamnit, I love this song so much:
  • A double dip of Shangri-La’s. This time you get the awesome Dobie “Drift Away” Gray along with the girls. Shindig! is such an awesome word. Time for it to make a comeback.

I’m sitting in a terminal waiting to board my flight to Colorado where I will be doing nothing but drinking wine, reading books, eating food, and listening to a bunch of recently acquired albums. Ta.

Mary certainly knows the blues. Hopefully, there will be performance/acting coaching. The problem I observe with singers who act – Whitney or Beyonce – is there is less awareness of how the film works against grand gestures. I don’t think Whitney or Beyonce should come across so terribly on films, but I definitely think folks just haven’t really explained to them how to take it down a taste for film

I think this problem is more prevalent in films with black entertainers partly because folks on the production end are just really excited to get someone super famous with drawing power in bankable role and – let’s face it – don’t think very highly of their targeted audience. e.g. Black folks will watch any piece of shit film as long as it’s got some famous rappers in it.

They’ll keep casting Redman, yet ignore Ludicris who is an AMAZING actor (much better than rapper in my opinion). Even Xhibit is pretty rad. Liked him in the X-files sequel.

I think India.Arie would be wonderful. She has a similar artistic aesthetic.

The other thing about Mary folks aren’t saying out loud – only hinting at – they believe her too be “ghetto” to embody the Buppie goddess and that just opens up a whole different can of fail.

I had a squee moment reading “Breaking News: Mary J. Blige has been cast to play Nina Simone in an upcoming biopic. ” I just love MJB, and if this works out, this could be great for her.

I remember Cher talking about wanting to do movies for YEARS before landing “Silkwood”, and being told she couldn’t act, she was a singer. Then after a few movies, she wanted to go back into the studio, and got told she couldn’t sing, she was an actor. Remember this people, you only get to be ONE THING – don’t go confusing head honchos by being versitile!

Cher’s filmography is infinitely more respectable than most “just actors” types. I mean she shut it down in a threepeat sort of way with:

Mask! I really liked Cher in Mask.

I really hope MJB covers Ne Me Quittez Pas, Young, Gifted and Black, and Mississippi Goddamn.
