R.I.P. Frank Frazetta

May 11, 2010

You might be saying, “Who?”

But if you’ve ever:

  1. Read a comic book
  2. Played Dungeons and Dragons
  3. Looked at Horror and Gore fanzines
  4. Read a fantasy novel
  5. Looked at movie posters
  6. Got busy in a sweet van with diamond shaped windows and a warrior chick airbrushed on the side

Then your life has been touched by the influence of Frank Frazetta.  Despite drawing for the well known Lil’ Abner comics in the 50’s, Mr. Frazetta is most well known for his epic illustrations of Conan the Barbarian.

Just another day's work for Conan.

He illustrated the movie poster for What’s New Pussycat?!!! His pictures of almost impossibly huge warriors surrounded by buxom babes, swirling mist, dragon tails, and licks of flame have a real beauty and atmosphere to them.

Avon calling!

And hey, the dude can DRAW and he can PAINT. Dude manipulates light in ways that would make Edward Hopper jealous He was a real master of his craft, which is why there are many crappy imitators airbrushing Orcs with babes hanging off them, but they lack well… any sort of… depth. Where would Metalllica be without Frank? Or Megadeth? Or hell, where would heavy metal (the music and the movie) be without him? Thanks for making the world a more fantastic place Mr. Frazetta. Hope there’s a whole lotta bitchin’ sword fights and adventures for you up in the big illustrator’s drawing board in the sky.

My fave Frazetta rave.

Frank’s work was a big influence on my own. I loved the fact that he worked in a lot of sepia and warm tones. He loved what he loved with ferocity, and I for one am much sadder at his passing. I can only hope that his talents fuel the minds and brushes of artists everywhere.
