Quick Pats of Butter: Your Friday Five

April 30, 2010

It’s Friday! Put some pants on!

  • Not Pictured: Roadie who looks like Willie Nelson

Jakob Dylan returns sans Wallflowers but picks up these two hot babes, you made of heard of them, Neko Case and Kelly Hogan. He’s named his new band Three Legs. Clicky over here to hear and/or download their Daytrotter session. I love it when bands aren’t afraid of twang. Let it bend, guys.

  • Happy 76th Birthday Willie Nelson! Thanks for takin’ it easy for all us sinners out there…
  • Aaron Smith references the Old Masters without being too precious or going for the easy route and making things shocking (ie: OMG he put a penis on the Mona Lisa’s face! The nerve!). Beautiful paintings that really do make you see things in a new way. Now that’s a shock.
  • The masters of camp as art/pop music… Ladies and gentlemen, Sparks.
  • Bonus pat: A picture of Saint Macca wearin’ big-ass sunglasses and some hats.

How badly do y’all want to hang out with Willie Nelson?

    ‘Cause I want to. Badly.

I got to hang out with Air Supply once, but I guess that doesn’t count. I still haven’t gotten an after-show invite to The Walkmen, and my cousin’s in that band. I don’t rate!

    OMG I LOVE THE WALKMEN!

    I LOVE HIPSTER MUSIC.

    MY CAPS ARE STUCK.

anyway, I do love “Blue Eyes Crying…” and I like the version on the hipsterific soundtrack to “The Hottest State”.

Really? Cool! Well, my cousin Paul is the guitarist and also songwrites and writes lyrics. And he’s a super nice person.

Love the Jakob Dylan tunes, thanks so much!

I got to hang out a couple times with John Lombardo — aka Jamestown’s Pete Best — a cool dude who turned me on to Alex Chilton and Gram Parsons. That’s about as close to famous as you get in my neck of the woods.

Yeah! The Walkmen are fantastic. You and Me was one of my fave albums last year, and they handled some shitty hipster scum at the show out here gracefully and with stinging wit. I have a t-shirt! The ultimate in fandom.

I’ve listened to the Jakob daytrotter sessions about 18 times today and it just keeps getting better. Neko and Kelly are so suited to his voice and the songs really balance modern pop with classic twang nicely. I’m gonna have to get the album, for sure.

Saw Neko Case live at a Toronto church…interesting venue, incredible performance.

Will look into this Lombardo character as he’s probably a distant cousin.

ok, funny, because last Monday I saw Jakob Dylan and the Three Legs, but it was on accident — my gf excitedly bought tickets to a show that night, because she follows Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, and so we went thinking they were opening for him and nope, they are his back-up singers and it felt kinda wrong. I mean, I don’t hate the dude or the idea, it just felt kinda eh live. Though maybe I was just real sad to see two of my favorite singers off to the side of the stage when I was expecting to hear their music and it isn’t the son of Dylan’s fault.

Yeah, I’m an enormous Neko and Kelly fan. It’s sort of embarrassing. We saw her both nights last time she was here, and I keep praying they will add her or Kelly to the Pickathon lineup. I like these daytrotter sessions, but Jakob is, by default, pretty milktoast. I love Neko with the New Pornos because they’re all a bunch of goofballs too, so her humor really comes through when she’s with a “rock” band. I think I like the daytrotter sessions because they sound like you’re listening in on a back porch jam. The record might totally suck.
