Are You Gonna Dance with Your Hand on My Ass All Night or Are You Gonna Make a Move?

April 14, 2010

Signs that thriller from your Netflix queue isn’t going to stink.

It is directed by someone named Sidney/Sydney

  • Sidney Lumet and the late Sydney Pollack are sure signs that for the most part the thriller you’ve decided to watch will in fact be thrilling. While by no means foolproof, these two certainly have more hits than misses.

Lumet: The Anderson Tapes, Serpico, DeathTrap, The Verdict

Pollack: The Firm, 3 Days of the Condor, Michael Clayton (actor/producer)

  • If it features the following actors:

  • Max Von Sydow, Christopher Plummer, Don Cheadle, James Earl Jones, Danny Glover

    If it does NOT feature:

  • Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman or Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman
  • If characters you’ve taken five minutes – during the opening credits – to really get to know are then immediately blown away while the main character is off doing something else.

  • see: 3 Days of the Condor, Mission Impossible ’96
  • If its title is consists of a single letter

  • examples: the film M and the film Z

This is another bookmarker as I pretty much always choose the most stanky-est of stankbutt thrillers. (Although I am a sucker for the weirdness of Cronenberg and he was refreshingly upbeat and down to earth when I went to see him speak. Not a trace of angsty artist about him.)

Ladies and gentlemen… Ms. Ashley Judd in 12 Angry Men.

Davids Cronenberg and Lynch are always great for thrillers and good conversation starters. And I like their commitment to craft without heading descending into insufferable-ness.

I feel weird even suggesting Z, which feels so 101 to me, but I’m told is PhD level in terms of thrillers!

This makes me want to watch Roger Corman’s X, especially the seXy dance scene.

I cannot deal with Cronenberg. Finding a good, contemporary thriller is tough; I usually stick to the oldies, so this is a good list.

hsofia – if you haven’t seen 3 days, it’s on instant. You will NOT be disappointed. It’s fresh like whoa.

    The Parallax View
    The Anderson Tapes
    The Conversation
The Day of the Jackal (GOLLY CHARLES FTW)

I’m actually working on a Condor post. I don’t think I’ve actually given it full Snarky’s Machine treatment before. I’m excited.
