Actors So Nice They Hired Them Twice (And Sometimes Thrice): Golden Girls Edition!

April 13, 2010

Golden Girls might have been the first “green” show on the air given its tendency to recycle plots (girls all fall in love with the same guy) clothing (Rose’s Airplane Sweater) and actors! Here are some of my favorites. It’s not a comprehensive list, just the ones I find most amusing.

Chick Vennera played both Enrique Mas and the prize fighter Kid Pepe Sophia brought home from a bus stop.

Andre Rosey Brown (1956 – 2006) played Michael Jackson’s bodyguard in Brother, Can You Spare That Jacket? and a couple of episodes later turned up as a bodybuilder who sings Puff the Magic Dragon in You Gotta Have Hope.

Ralph Ahn played the infamous “Jim Shu” in Yes, We Have No Havanas and Mr. Yakamora in “We’re Outta Here Part I”.

Ellen Albertini Dow appeared as THREE different characters in three different episodes of the show. The Days and Nights of Sophia Pertrillo, Sophia’s Choice and Older and Wiser.

Dow on the left.

Thespian Nan Martin , who died a month ago, is by far the most memorable of the bunch with her appearance as Frieda Claxton in It’s a Miserable Life and Philomena Bosco in Foreign Exchange.

Great post, I never realized how frequently they did this! And I love that shot of Sophia sparring with the pot mitts.

One of my favorite aspects of the show is how the other girls were always so dismissive of Sophia and were always surprised by her.

It was pretty well utilized in Season Four.

I’m always surprised when shows do this kind of stuff because I’m sure people had to notice, but I guess they just didn’t care. It’s like when they replaced Becky on Roseanne or Darren on Bewitched and didn’t say anything.

It is so bad when a mere three or four episodes later you see the SAME actor again. I mean in the case of Ralph Ahn, why the hair and make up people couldn’t be arsed to wig him is beyond me. He did a different accent as Mr. Yakamura, but beyond that he looked and behaved similar to Jim Shu.

Fantastic post! I missed the import of most of these folks at the time, but now I’m grateful to get to see them. And I really appreciate your tongue-in-cheek title, which coincides with my favorite GG moment ever.

    two more, both uncredited…..

    1) The contestant next to Rose in the “Grab That Dough” episode is also in “Sophia’s Wedding Part 1” – she is on the couch sitting next to Dorothy at the Elvis Fan Club meeting. She passed the partially-eaten pork chop to Dorothy.

    2) When Blanche’s daughter Becky goes to the sperm bank, the guy in the waiting room that Sophia talks to is also in the episode where the Girls go to the Miami High School reunion and Rose has the heart attack. He’s one of the orderlies that wheels Rose into the operating room.
